Fire Extinguishers & Fire Blankets

Does your business have the correct Fire Extinguishers for the Risks involved?

To comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, it’s highly likely Fire Extinguishers would be recommended as part of any Fire Protection Solution for a business or building. Having the correct types of Fire Extinguishers is essential.

Fire Extinguishers & Fire Blankets

Fires need three things to start – a Source of Ignition (Heat), a Source of Fuel (Something that burns) & Oxygen:

  • Sources of Ignition include heaters, lighting, naked flames, electrical equipment, smokers’ materials (cigarettes, matches etc), & anything else that can get very hot or cause sparks
  • Sources of Fuel include wood, paper, plastic, rubber or foam, loose packaging materials, waste rubbish, chemicals, hazardous waste products, flammable liquids, cooking fats / oils & furniture
  • Sources of Oxygen include the air around us

In case fire breaks out in your premises, you need to ensure the correct Fire Extinguishers are available for use. No single Fire Extinguisher is totally effective on every kind of fire; it is essential to identify & understand what your fire risks are & which Fire Extinguisher to use.

Fire Extinguishers are designed to tackle specific types of Fires; there are six classes & several different types of Fire Extinguishers.

Classes of fire

  • Class A – Fires involving solid materials such as wood, paper or textiles.
  • Class B – Fires involving flammable liquids such as petrol, diesel or oils.
  • Class C – Fires involving gases.
  • Class D – Fires involving metals.
  • Class E – Fires involving live electrical apparatus. (Technically ‘Class E’ doesn’t exists however this is used for convenience here)
  • Class F – Fires involving cooking oils such as in deep-fat fryers.

Businesses, Charities, Schools, Universities, Community Halls, Care Homes, Libraries to name but few, all have responsibility for the provision of appropriate firefighting equipment. It is also your responsibility to check that all firefighting equipment is in the correct position & in satisfactory order before the premises are used.  Staff should be trained how to recognise & use of all such equipment. Fires are classed according to the material or substance burning which is burning; Fire Extinguishers provided should be suitable & safe to use on to the classes of fire found in your premises.

Extinguisher Cabinets & Stands

Our range of Fire Extinguisher Cabinets & Stands provide an clear identifiable fire point, so your fire protection equipment can be easily seen; they also provide protection from accidental damage, misuse & tampering. Locating your equipment in this way not only reduces the possibility of the equipment not working due to damage or tampering, but when using a stand, allows the equipment to be sited in more flexible locations where wall space may be a premium & when using a cabinet, saves on unwanted repair costs.

Fire Extinguishers should be permanently mounted on secure wallbrackets or placed on stands, in conspicuous positions where persons following an escape route can easily see them, e.g. close to exits.

Fire Safety Signs & Notices

Clear Signage can Save Lives

An effectively signed building provides clear direction for the quickest & safest escape route out in the case of a fire.

Part of complying with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, requires accurate & up to date Fire Safety Signage.  It is the legal duty of the buildings owner or occupier to ensure the safety of all persons entering by installing appropriate Fire Safety Signage.

Current legislation requires, that from a given point within a building, the occupant can easily identify their nearest safe escape route.

These Regulations state that:

  • Employers must use Fire Safety Signs wherever there is a risk to Health & Safety, which cannot be controlled by other means.
  • Fire Safety signs must be of a specified type.
  • All signs must contain a pictogram; text only signs are not acceptable.
  • Illuminated signs must be properly maintained & adequately lit.
  • Employers must ensure the signs are understood by employees.

Safety Signs are divided into categories according to the type of message they are intended to convey; each category is assigned a specific format & set of colours. Detailed specifications such as relative dimensions, proportions & colours are given in BS 5499.

The RRO states Fire Safety Signs must be fitted at all business premises, to help prevent and fight fires.  What type of signs need to be in place?

To Help Prevent Fires

  • Prohibition Signs – This category includes “No Smoking” notices. These messages outline a prohibited action which could increase the risk of a fire.
  • Mandatory Signs – Indicate the steps people must take to comply with fire regulations, which are designed to safeguard occupants. An example of a mandatory sign is a “Fire Door Keep Shut”.
  • Warning Signs – Are required to make people aware of the presence of a hazard.  E.g. a store cupboard which contains potentially dangerous liquids.

To Aid Evacuation & Dealing with a Fire

  • Safe Condition Signs – Indicate Fire Escape Routes, Fire Assembly Points & First Aid equipment; to guide occupants dealing with an Emergency or Escaping the building.
  • Fire Exit Signs – Are required in to highlight the location of Fire Exits, so those escaping the building quickly, know which door to head for.
  • Fire Equipment Signs – Direct people to the location of Fire Fighting equipment, such as Fire Extinguishers & Fire Alarm activation points.
  • Supplementary Information Signs – Provide further instruction; these signs include information such as a directional arrows or text to expand on neighbouring notices.

Fire Detection & Equipment Alarms

Fire Queen Limited provides Fire Alarm Maintenance & Fire Extinguisher Maintenance throughout Greater Manchester (including Stockport, Manchester, Lancashire, Cheshire & Mersyside), the North West & Nationwide.

We also stock an Extensive range of Tamper Alarms for both Fire Extinguisher & Fire Alarm Components.

Your Fire Alarm Panel is the core of any Fire Alarm system – it controls & monitors all the devices in the system. The Fire Alarm panel monitors the system for Detector Activation, Faults & Activates visual & / or Audible warning devices when needed.

Fire Alarm Systems are occasionally tampered with or activated for malicious purposes; a simple but effective solutions is:

  • The Mini Stopper consists of a clear tough polycarbonate hinged cover which retrofits securely over the device.
  • The Stopper II consists of a clear, tamper-proof, tough polycarbonate cover & frame which fits over the break glass call point.

Additionally, Fire Extinguishers occasionally require further protection in high risk areas, where tampering, theft, misuse & malicious damage is prevalent. In these circumstances we are able to supply Anti-Tamper / Theft Alarms. These attach to the neck of the Fire Extinguisher just below the handle & then to the wall, Fire Stand or Mobile Trolley & once the Fire Extinguisher is removed from its Fire Point beyond a certain distance, the Alarm is triggered. In an actual Fire, this acts as an Alarm itself, not replacing, but assisting the indication of a Fire to nearby staff. In the case of Tampering, Misuse or even Theft, it alerts staff to this fact & potentially allows the equipment to be recovered.

Call Point Mini-Stopper (Flush Mounted)

The Mini Stopper is an aesthetic, inexpensive cover which provides a secure fit to a wide range of electrical switches & call points. The cover prevents misuse to the device without restricting legitimate operation. It is ideal for shopping centers, hotels, schools, colleges, hospitals, nursing homes & all public buildings where there is a risk of malicious or accidental activation.

How it Works

The Mini Stopper consists of a clear, tough, polycarbonate hinged cover which retrofits securely over the device; simply lift the cover to gain access to the device. Once the cover is released, the spring loaded hinge returns the cover to its original position.

Call Point Cover – Heavy Duty (Flush Mounted)

Larger cover to help stop malicious or accidental false fire alarms. Physically larger than the Stopper, the Stopper II is a unique device which has been helping stop false fire alarms around the world for more than 20 years, without restricting legitimate operation of devices such as fire alarm break glass call points. It is ideal for schools, colleges, hospitals, nursing homes, hotels & public buildings of almost every kind where there is a history or a threat of false alarms.

How it Works

The Stopper II consists of a clear, tamper-proof, tough polycarbonate cover & frame which fits over the break glass call point. When lifted to gain access to the call point, its optional battery powered integral sounder emits a piercing 95/97 dB (at 1 metre). Immediate attention is drawn to the area and a prankster will either run or be caught.
